Tesla FSD (TAD) in the UK: Current Status

As of 11 October 2026, Tesla FSD (TAD) isn't approved or available in the UK yet. EU approvals don't apply automatically here, so it needs its own GB approval from the VCA.

Where Tesla FSD (TAD) stands in the UK

EU approvals like the Dutch RDW one don't apply automatically in Great Britain. The UK has adopted R79 and R171, and the US version of FSD (Supervised) doesn't comply with either as written.

What would change that: the VCA grants a GB exemption like the EU one, or the UNECE review of R171 opens a route (no definite timeframe). Next up: my DfT FOI on R171, due around 22 Oct 2026. December is the earliest EU-wide vote, and it doesn't bind the UK.

When will FSD (TAD) come to the UK?

Is FSD (TAD) legal in the UK right now?

Not in the form Tesla sells in the US. The UK has adopted R79 and R171, and the US version of FSD (Supervised) doesn't comply with either as written. With driver assistance, the driver stays "responsible for the vehicle at all times".

How UK approval would work (VCA, not the EU)

Tesla would have to apply to the VCA for a GB exemption like the one in the EU. The VCA would use Tesla's evidence plus its own testing. The DfT has withheld its papers on recognising the Dutch approval as a "live" policy issue.

Supervised vs unsupervised: what the AV Act covers

The AV Act 2024 framework, for vehicles where the driver isn't liable, is intended for the second half of 2027. The DfT consultation on its Statement of Safety Principles closed on 9 Sep 2026. I haven't seen an outcome yet.

New UK rules on 'self-driving' claims (7 Jan 2027)

From 7 January 2027, eight terms including "self-driving", "driverless" and "autonomous" are restricted in GB marketing for cars that aren't authorised automated vehicles. Separately, Tesla renamed FSD (Supervised) to Tesla Assisted Driving (TAD) in the UK and Europe on 8 October 2026.

What we're waiting for

My DfT FOI on R171 (due around 22 Oct 2026). The UNECE review of R171, which has no definite timeframe. And the EU vote: December at the earliest, and it doesn't bind the UK.

Is Tesla FSD (TAD) available in the UK?

No. As of 11 October 2026 it isn't approved in the UK yet. I list it as Under Review, with an H1 2027 target.

Does the Dutch or EU approval count in the UK?

No. The VCA says Article 39 decisions "do not apply automatically in Great Britain". The UK would need its own approval after an application from Tesla, including a full safety assessment.

When will FSD (TAD) come to the UK?

There's no official date yet; my target is H1 2027. The VCA says launch plans are commercially sensitive and a question for Tesla. A UNECE review of R171 could allow a version into the UK, but there's no definite timeframe for it.
