Tesla FSD Supervised UK Timeline RDW Approval and VCA Process Explained

Tesla owners in the UK have been eagerly awaiting Full Self-Driving (FSD) Supervised. With the Netherlands RDW granting the first European type approval in April 2026, a realistic UK launch is finally on the horizon.

Here’s the latest timeline, the two main routes Tesla is taking, and exactly what version of FSD Supervised you can expect.

Current Status (June 2026)

Tesla has secured provisional type approval from the Dutch RDW under UN Regulation 171 (Driver Control Assistance Systems - DCAS).

The UK is not in the EU, so there is no automatic mutual recognition. The VCA is expected to review the RDW approval and test data under current rules.

FSD Supervised is currently listed as “Under Review” for Great Britain.

The Two Main Routes for UK Approval

1. Fastest route: RDW approval + VCA submission (recommended path)

This route allows Tesla to bring over the most capable version of FSD Supervised available today - the same advanced software already rolling out in the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and other early-adopter countries.

It is currently limited to HW4 cars (the hardware in newer models). HW3 cars (common in older UK Teslas) are not yet covered by the European approvals. Tesla is expected to release an HW3 “lite” or optimised branch of FSD that is almost as capable as the HW4 version. This new HW3 software is expected to roll out first in the US in June/July 2026 and will likely be adapted for Europe and the UK shortly afterwards.

Another helpful factor: Australia (a right-hand-drive market like the UK) has started rolling out advanced FSD Supervised updates to HW4 vehicles in 2026. The real-world RHD data and software refinements from Australia will directly strengthen Tesla’s UK VCA submission.

Expected timeline: Late 2026 to early 2027 (4-10 months after the April 2026 RDW approval).

2. Standard UNECE route (slower but more standardised)

The World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (WP.29) is scheduled to meet 23-26 June 2026. At that meeting they are expected to formally adopt the 02 series amendments to UN R171 - known as DCAS Phase 3. These rules typically enter into force around January 2027 after a short implementation period.

What Phase 3 includes (from Jan 2027):

  • System-initiated manoeuvres (lane changes, turns) no longer restricted to highways - allowed on local and urban roads.
  • Expanded hands-off driving on highway-like roads.
  • Better parking and low-speed operations.
  • Stronger validation methods and safety-case requirements.

What is still excluded (requires Phase 4/5):

Phase 4 and Phase 5 have not even started yet. After completing Phase 3, the ADAS Task Force took a deliberate break and invited stakeholders to submit proposals before beginning the next phase. These future phases are expected to cover even more complex urban edge cases, broader hands-off tolerance in dense traffic, refined driver monitoring for longer periods of minimal input, and the final tweaks needed for full parity with the current US version of FSD Supervised.

Expected timeline: Initial approvals under the new rules possible from January 2027 onwards, but full feature parity would come later once Phase 4/5 are completed.

Comparison of the Two Routes

Aspect RDW to VCA Route (Current) UNECE Phase 3 Route (Jan 2027+)
Speed Fastest (late 2026 / early 2027) Slower (January 2027 onward)
Version Capability Most capable version available today (advanced urban driving) Improved standard version (Phase 3 features) but still needs Phase 4/5 for full US-like parity
Hardware HW4 only for now (HW3 lite expected June/July 2026) Same hardware limitations initially
Pros Earliest rollout, fullest features now, leverages existing data Cleaner, fully standardised approval for future updates
Cons Uses current rules + exemptions Longer wait, Phase 4/5 still required for complete parity

FAQ

Is FSD coming to the UK?

Yes. The RDW approval is already in hand and the UK VCA is expected to review it. Realistic rollout is expected late 2026 or early 2027.

Is Tesla FSD worth it in the UK?

For many owners, yes - especially once the more advanced city-driving features become available. Early data from the Netherlands shows significantly fewer collisions than manual driving. Whether the £99 per month subscription makes sense depends on your mileage and how much you value the convenience of supervised hands-off driving on UK roads.

Are Teslas allowed to self drive in the UK?

No - not yet. FSD Supervised is classified as a Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System. The driver remains fully responsible and must stay attentive at all times. True self-driving (Level 3+) is governed by the Automated Vehicles Act 2024 and is still further away.

Full Self-Driving (FSD) Supervised - What is it?

FSD Supervised is Tesla’s most advanced driver-assistance package. It can handle steering, acceleration, braking, lane changes, navigation and parking, but the driver must keep their eyes on the road and hands ready to take over. It is not autonomous - the “Supervised” label is important and legally required in every market where it is offered.

Can I get Tesla FSD for free in the UK?

No. FSD Supervised is available only via a £99 per month subscription. There are no current free trials or promotions confirmed for the UK market.

Outlook

The RDW to VCA route gives UK owners the best chance of getting the fullest version of FSD Supervised as early as possible. The January 2027 UNECE rules will make future updates cleaner and more standardised, but they are not required for the initial launch.
