What is Tesla Assisted Driving (TAD)?

So, what is Tesla Assisted Driving? TAD (FSD), which used to be called FSD Supervised, is Tesla's European and UK name for the supervised driver assistance package most people still search for as FSD.

Same system. You're still responsible. New label on the websites.

Tesla rolled the Assisted Driving brand across Europe and the UK on 8 October 2026. Old /fsd links redirect to /tesla-assisted-driving pages. I checked ten of those sites on 8 October for the rename news article.

Tesla doesn't use the abbreviation "TAD". I write TAD (FSD) so it works whichever name you search for.

What it is

TAD (FSD) is supervised driver assistance.

It can steer, accelerate, brake, change lanes and handle a lot of a mapped drive. You supervise the whole time. Hands ready. Eyes on the road.

In Europe it sits under UN Regulation No. 171 for Driver Control Assistance Systems (DCAS). That class keeps a human in control. It is not an Automated Driving System that takes legal responsibility for the driving task.

Dutch type approval treated it the same way. A car with FSD Supervised is not self-driving. The RDW said so in plain language when it granted provisional European type approval on 10 April 2026.

Why Tesla renamed it

The political trigger sits in Germany.

On 6 October 2026 Germany's Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV) published a statement quoting transport minister Steffen Bilger. Tesla offered the rename because the "FSD" label was "etwas irreführend" (somewhat misleading).

The ministry's line is simple. This is not a system that takes over the full driving task on its own. It can support accelerating, braking and steering. The driver must stay attentive.

So Tesla offered Tesla Assisted Driving as the clearer name.

Bilger also said September talks produced a constructive agreement on technical points and liability. On that basis he will push for timely EU-wide approval. That's a process signal. It isn't German customer availability, and it isn't a recorded TCMV vote.

I went through the statement, the Autopilot court history and the UNECE marketing rules in the 8 October rename article. This page is just the short answer.

Where it is live

As of the EU tracker data on this site, 8 EU countries have an Approved stance:

Netherlands, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Croatia, Lithuania, Slovenia, Estonia.

Croatia, on 29 September 2026, was the latest of that group according to Tesla Europe. Approval covers eligible HW4 cars. HW3 cars do not have the full European feature yet. See the FSD v14 Lite for HW3 page for that branch.

Everywhere else in the EU, including Germany, France, Italy and Spain, the full feature is not a normal customer download yet. The EU's Technical Committee on Motor Vehicles discussed the file on 6 October 2026 without a vote. December 2026 is the earliest EU-wide vote window I am tracking. Country-by-country detail sits on the EU tracker.

The UK is separate. EU approvals do not apply automatically in Great Britain. The VCA has said it has not undertaken type approval activity for Tesla FSD, and that Dutch approvals do not apply automatically. See the UK hub and the FOI library.

Local names

Headings say Assisted Driving across the European sites I checked. Local language still appears where Tesla localises the page.

France: Tesla Conduite Assistée. The French page also refers to "Tesla Conduite Assistée Basique" as already available while the full option waits on regulatory approval.

Norway: Tesla Assistert kjøring.

The Netherlands is the awkward one. The heading says Tesla Assisted Driving. The body still uses "Full Self-Driving (Supervised)" / "FSD (Supervised)" in the market where the product is actually sold. Website brand and commercial body copy can diverge.

What is Tesla Assisted Driving Basic?

TAD Basic is the new name for the package Tesla used to sell as Full Self-Driving Capability.

So FSD (Supervised) is now TAD Basic. Same package. New label.

It only does the supervised city streets driving where a country has approved it. In the UK it doesn't yet.

Tesla's UK transfer page now calls Full Self-Driving Capability "now Tesla Assisted Driving Basic". In France it's "Tesla Conduite Assistée Basique".

TAD vs FSD: what did not change

The US name did not flip to Assisted Driving on the same day. The US still sells Full Self-Driving (Supervised) in the material I have been tracking.

The rename did not rewrite UN R171. R171 does not ban the letters "FSD". It requires balanced marketing and bans misleading descriptions of capability. Terms a national authority has already deemed misleading should not be used in DCAS marketing. Germany's ministry has now called "FSD" somewhat misleading. That is a national political call, not a UNECE banned-words list.

Price: the Dutch page still said a subscription was available for €99 per month when checked on 8 October 2026. I have seen no confirmed Europe-wide price cut tied to the rename.

Hardware: European approvals for the full feature still sit on HW4 for the approved countries. The rename did not invent HW3 support.

Driver responsibility: unchanged. You stay responsible.

UK angle

The UK site now leads with Tesla Assisted Driving.

Separately, from 7 January 2027 the Automated Vehicles (Marketing Restrictions) Regulations 2026 (SI 2026/733) restrict listed terms such as "self-driving", "driverless" and "autonomous" in GB marketing for cars that are not authorised automated vehicles. That sits under section 78 of the Automated Vehicles Act 2024. Section 79 covers confusing autonomy claims.

"FSD" on its own is not on the restricted list. Context still matters. The Act's self-driving authorisation regime does not turn supervised TAD (FSD) into an authorised self-driving vehicle. It stays consumer driver assistance until a separate approval path says otherwise.

This site's own supervised UK target is H1 2027. That is a target, not a decision. No customer FSD (TAD) in the UK yet.

How this site writes the name

First mention on a page: Tesla Assisted Driving, TAD (FSD), formerly FSD Supervised.

After that: TAD (FSD).

Title tags and H1s still keep "FSD" because that is what people search. Dated news articles may keep "FSD Supervised" in the headline.

I never call it "Full Self-Driving" as if the car drives itself without you. The supervised bit is the whole point.

FAQ

Is Tesla Assisted Driving different from FSD (Supervised)?

There is no evidence of a different product. It is the same supervised driver assistance system under a clearer European and UK name. The driver stays responsible.

Does Tesla use the abbreviation TAD?

No. Tesla's sites say Tesla Assisted Driving (or a local translation). This site writes TAD (FSD) so searchers for either name can find the pages.

Where is TAD (FSD) approved in the EU right now?

According to this site's EU tracker data, 8 countries have Approved stance: Netherlands, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Croatia, Lithuania, Slovenia, Estonia. Elsewhere in the EU it is still pending national recognition or the EU-wide process.

Did the rename change the price or the hardware?

No evidence of a price or hardware change from the rename itself. The Dutch page still showed a €99 a month subscription when checked on 8 October 2026. HW4 is what the current European approvals cover; HW3 does not have the full European feature yet.

Does the UK Automated Vehicles Act ban the name FSD?

From 7 January 2027, listed terms such as "self-driving" are restricted in GB marketing for cars that are not authorised automated vehicles (SI 2026/733 under the Automated Vehicles Act 2024). "FSD" alone is not on that restricted list. The UK site has already moved to Tesla Assisted Driving.

What is Tesla Assisted Driving Basic?

It's the new name for FSD (Supervised), the package Tesla used to sell as Full Self-Driving Capability. Same package, new label. The supervised city streets driving only switches on where your country approves it.

Where is the news piece on the rename?

See Why Tesla Is Renaming FSD in Europe to Tesla Assisted Driving (8 October 2026). This page is the evergreen explainer; that article is the dated news report.
