Slovakia gives preliminary approval to Tesla FSD (TAD)

Slovakia Gives Preliminary Approval to Tesla FSD (TAD)

BRATISLAVA, 16 October 2026. Slovakia's Ministry of Transport has officially recognised the preliminary type approval of Tesla FSD (TAD), so drivers on Slovak roads will be able to use the system. Tesla now calls FSD (Supervised) Tesla Assisted Driving (TAD) in Europe, which is why you'll see both names. The ministry says this makes Slovakia one of only a few European countries that have allowed it.

This approval works through recognition, because the Dutch regulator RDW issued the preliminary approval in April and other EU member states can then recognise it on their own territory, which is exactly what Slovakia did today.

What Minister Jozef Ráž said about Tesla FSD Supervised

In the ministry's press release, transport minister Jozef Ráž was clear that this is not a car that drives itself. Translated from Slovak, he said:

"It is not a fully autonomous system, so you shouldn't imagine that the driver's seat in cars will be left empty. The driver is still fully responsible for the drive. The system therefore constantly monitors their attention, and if it detects that they are not paying attention to driving, it warns them and switches off if necessary."

He also said, again translated from Slovak: "I'm glad that when it comes to modern technology in transport, Slovakia isn't falling behind. Road safety is extremely important to us, so we're happy to support every innovation that improves it."

What FSD Supervised can do on Slovak roads

The ministry describes FSD Supervised as an advanced driver assistance software package that helps in towns and on motorways. It says the system can accelerate, brake, steer, change lanes, get through junctions and respond to road signs and traffic lights on its own, using cameras and neural networks. The ministry hasn't given a date for when Tesla will switch it on for Slovak owners, though.

Key facts

  • Decision: Slovak Ministry of Transport recognises the preliminary type approval, 16 October 2026
  • Original approval: RDW type approval issued in the Netherlands in April 2026
  • Driver responsibility: the driver stays fully responsible at all times
  • EU-wide vote: not before December 2026, per the EU tracker

Tesla FSD in Europe: where Slovakia fits

The Netherlands was the first EU country to approve the system. The EU tracker shows Lithuania, Estonia, Denmark, Belgium, Slovenia, Czechia and Croatia have followed, and Slovakia is now the ninth. You can see every country's status on the Tesla FSD Europe map.

Tesla still doesn't have approval across the whole EU, though. The EU committee discussed it again on 6 October 2026 without a vote, so December is the earliest chance. An EU-wide rollout needs a qualified majority of 15 of the 27 member states, representing 65% of the EU population.

What happens next

For Slovak owners, the next step is Tesla actually rolling the software out, and that timing hasn't been announced yet. For the rest of Europe, it's possible that more countries will recognise the RDW type approval before the EU vote, so national decisions like this one are likely to keep coming. If you want to understand the rules the system has to meet, the UNECE R171 Series 02 explainer covers what changes for Tesla FSD in Europe.

FAQ

Is Tesla FSD (TAD) approved in Slovakia?

Yes. On 16 October 2026 the Slovak Ministry of Transport said it had officially recognised the preliminary type approval of Tesla FSD (TAD), the system previously sold as FSD Supervised, so drivers on Slovak roads will be able to use the system.

Is this a Slovak approval or an EU approval?

It's a national decision. The Dutch regulator RDW issued the preliminary approval in April, other member states can recognise it on their own territory, and Slovakia has now done exactly that. There's still no EU-wide approval, though.

Does FSD (TAD) mean the car drives itself in Slovakia?

No. Minister Jozef Ráž said it is not a fully autonomous system and the driver remains fully responsible. The system monitors the driver's attention, warns them and switches off if necessary.

When is the EU-wide vote on Tesla FSD (TAD)?

Not before December 2026, as the Not an FSD Tracker EU tracker shows. The EU committee discussed it again on 6 October without a vote. An EU-wide rollout needs a qualified majority of 15 of the 27 member states, representing 65% of the EU population.

Which other EU countries allow Tesla FSD (TAD)?

The Netherlands was first. The Not an FSD Tracker EU tracker shows Lithuania, Estonia, Denmark, Belgium, Slovenia, Czechia and Croatia have followed, and Slovakia is now the ninth.
